Kingston Harbour Eco-Restoration Initiative (KHERI)

Jamaica’s Kingston Harbour, the seventh largest natural harbour globally, faces a severe pollution problem, primarily attributed to solid waste. The extensive debris, transported through gully and drainage systems, poses a significant threat to the crucial mangroves and marine life in the area, as well as the overall usability of the harbour for various purposes.

KHERI implements a two-pronged approach to address this issue. Downstream, waste collector pontoons will facilitate regular cleanups on and below the water surface. Upstream, inner city communities living along the gullies will be engaged in a creative educational programme aimed at reducing debris flow into the harbour. At our first harbour cleanup, we collected 1997 lbs (906 kg) of garbage both on and below the water surface.
